# Proxy pool

A proxy pool is the collection of exit IP addresses available to a gateway at a given moment. Its size, geographic spread and turnover determine how many distinct addresses you can get in a country or city, how often the same address is reused against a target, and how quickly blocked exits are replaced. Advertised pool sizes usually count addresses seen over a month; the number online right now is smaller.

- "X million IPs" is typically a monthly unique count, not concurrent capacity.
- What matters for a job is the pool in your target country or city at your time of day.
- Turnover cuts both ways: fresh addresses have clean histories, but a session can lose its exit.


## Pool versus list

A pool is consumed through a [gateway](https://proxshift.com/glossary/proxy-gateway) that picks exits for you; a list is a fixed set of static addresses you manage yourself. Residential and mobile products are pools; ISP and datacenter products are lists.
